Anyone have an idea of what the fastest 1/4mile time is from a 2.9L ranger?

I've got a spare wet nitrous kit laying in the bottom of my tool box. I was thinking about sticking it on my new truck i just got and seeing what she could crack off with maybe a 75 shot. :icon_cheers:

trying to g ofor the fastest 2.9? your going to need alot more than a 75 shot of nitrous

ha, i'm not trying to be the fastest. I'm just curious to hear about fast 2.9L engines. i want to slap some juice on mine, just to see how fast a stock 2.9L can go, before i swap a 2.3turbo motor into this truck.

theres been a few turbocharged 2.9s around here pushing over 15 psi on stock internals. a few 4.0s have been into the 12s and maybe 11s or faster i havent really looked into it.

2.9L plus turbo or nitrous = fast for a second and then parts flying everywhere. Yes, like any motor, it could handle it if done right. But the 2.9 is going to be $$$$$$ to do right and make power.

James Pringle had good luck with his until a failure on the boost control caused a blowup. Not really the 2.9's fault. However, if you're going through a turbo conversion it works out better to start with a 2.3 (more solid bottom end and better parts available) or a 4.0 (extra displacement and a more reliable place to start).

I love a 2.9 for what it is, owned two and they were good to me. However, the 4.0 fixed a lot of its problems. Take care of it, run it till it dies, then either replacement with the best condition used motor available or swap. No sense putting money into it when there are far better options available.

Ba Hum Bug...save the bottle...spare the interanls form the Turbo....

go JATO....(Jet Assisted Take Off)....Take the bed off ...slap on a short flat bed so you can strap the JATO or JATO's to the frame. Some Aero wings...and it'll look like something straight out of starwars LOL

never said I wanted to do nitrous AND a turbo. i was thinking about putting nitrous on the 2.9L.... then remove the entire engine, and swap in a 2.3L turbo motor from a turbocoupe or something.

If you put the bottle on it and take it down the 1/4 mile to blow it up, make sure to have someone video tape that. :D I want to see it, too. Curious on what you ran as well (if you get any times).

nitrous and 2.9 heads don't mix.

"world heads" mix well with a lot. never had a problem with them though. i have a lot of high rpms on them.

make sure you have plenty of fuel to go with that nitrous and you should be ok. In fact I would run it a little on the rich side to be safe (get an air fuel ratio meter). this of course assumes your engine is in excellent condition. if you have worn rings or anthing of that nature the increased cylinder pressure and temperature will severley increase the rate at wich your engine degrades. you may also want to consider getting a cooler thermostat. you want to try to avoid overheating your piston rings. Bottom line: do some research an make sure you tune your nitrous correctly.

Also the 2.9 valve train doesn't seem to be particularly robust so wtch those high RPM's.

With all those details, the fastest 2.9L will be the one in free fall.....should be good for about 8.6 sec in the 1/4 mile. But it's hard to find a cliff that tall. Perhaps push it out of the back of a C-141?

It's the only way to get one of these up to 190 MPH or so.

Of course that's only in a vacuum. But it will still be the fastest even with wind resistance, with a 1G terminal velocity around 150 MPH.
