Moving a rock...

Finally got around to moving a rock I dug out of my excavation--we're improving our camp with bigger rocks as I get around to them. After I burst 2 hoses on my Bobcat trying to lift it, I decided to do it the old fashioned pyramids building way. Except I don't think they had a chainfall.

This rock is about 16" x 42" x 26" if you judge the median in each dimension. It works out to 1,600#. It was a hell of a load pulling it up my hill. When I hit the steepest part the front of the truck came WAY up and I was afraid to let off for fear of stopping forward progress. It was up for 50 feet or so until I went over the top and could let off a bit. :bad:

I still have Coffin Rock to move. It's medians out to 10x19x57 so it's about 1,000# exactly. My loader can pick it up so I don't get to assemble to gin pole. I have a dozen or so 200-500#ers which I can just put in the back of the B2 a couple at a time.

And last, is the outhouse--hand dug and made in USA.

Pins from the tractor supply. Black water pipe that fit them snuggly. I welded a 4" angle onto the rear of the frame. Then made a frame for the bed. It's endured tons of abuse. As is evident from the less than pristeen condition of the body. It will dump 5,000# of wet clay with the 60" Highlift. Very nice not to have to shovel it out. The only thing I would change is to put real trailer springs on the axle. The Ranger springs are way too soft for a trailer. It starts way high up and then is down on the bumpstops by the time you get about 2,000# in it. That's a big load for a Ranger, but nothing for a Ranger trailer.

very nice, anybody ever think of making a thread dedicated to trailers that user build. I remeber a long time ago, not sure if it was on the old site, but a guy was building some sweet trail trailers.

I really cant believe those pins and welds stood up to that rock. But then again, the pics prolly don't do them justice.

Weakest link man.
he picked it up with a single string of chain. All that has to break there is 1/2 a chain link. Those hinges are stronger than that. I'm impressed with what sort of condition the bottom of the bed is in!

Sorry to post agian but i was just think. Damn it must be nice to have your own camp site. and even had your own shitter built on property. So is the camp site near your house or are you planning to on building a cabin near the campsite.

You could put at least 2 more rocks of that size in there. The leaf springs are not overloaded at all! haha jokingly.

The dump bed caught me by surprise. Not worried about the Hi-lift from slipping?

I built this trailer to excavate the foundation for my barn--and I've haued a million pounds of wet clay (I calculated that) and it's never failed to serve. That's 231 loads. When the clay is really wet I had to use all of my weight to get the Highlift up the first 15 strokes until the the load shifted back far enough to let up. But clay doubles its weight when wet so a full load of regular soil is no problem.

We moved here in 1997. My wife built a little hiking path but it wasn't until this year that we decided to make a camp. It is about 700 feet from the house and about 150 feet higher. It's pretty remote. You can't really hear anything unless you listen carefully. It's on the edge of a 1,000acre woods with no roads through it. Tony Stewart also owns part of the same woods. You can see a lot of stars--not like the desert or ocean, but not bad for the midwest. I have an 8" telescope. I found the flattest spot, made a 16' circle of rocks and hauled a bunch of crushed stone up the hill in another contrivance of mine--a 10 cubic foot red garden wagon with no wheel that I welded a 2" tube to and it slides into the receiver of the B2. Damn handy for small jobs. Then my wife wanted an outhouse so I built that for her. It's got all the comforts in it including an LED motion sensing light inside.

I hate camping--but that's fine. I can drink a few beers, tell a few lies, hump down the hill and go to bed and leave the outdoorsmen to their thing.

Those are 1" pins. The welds are pretty ugly but that pipe just disappears when you put very much heat on it, which makes it a little tough to weld to 1/4" steel down in the groove there. It's far from weak though.

As far as the Hi-Lift. It is connected to the trailer on both ends with pins. It's part of the trailer.
