Just wondering if it's possible to swap a 2.9L head to a 4.0L head. I know they sit on the same block. but other than that i have no idea how well it would work. Anybody have an knowledge into this?

Yes the heads can be interchanged. However it is not a simple project. The coolant passages are not in the same exact places. to put 4.0 heads on a 2.9 there are actually two passages that will overhang the block do to the shape of the 2.9 block.

so what then would be involved? and is there any performance difference? i just have a stock 2.9.

Interesting thought, back in the day, I knew guys who put 340 heads on the 318 but hadn't thought about it with a 2.9...if the 4.0 heads overhang, would it be possible to put 4.0 valves in a 2.9 head? Just curious..no time for that kinda fun these days...

yeah i don't have the resources to try it. But if someone knows i really would like to know. Possibly do it to my truck, as i am planning on either getting another set for 2.9 and porting/polishing or a 4.0 set if they work.
