I should of made this thread a long time ago. I took these pics in order to document it for TRS and never got around to it.
Items required:
- Some kind of multipurpose detergent to cut through grease and clean wheels.
- 2 cans of Plastidip, your color of choice
- 1 can of clear coat. I used Krylon but Plastidip has their own.
- A deck of cards.
- Tin Foil
I had some (once nice) Cragar 8's in need of a refurb. No matter how much I polished these guys they rusted up quickly. Driving all highway, 60 miles a day through PA, NJ and DE has really beatten up my wheels.
1st, I removed the wheels and gave them a bath. After they were dry, I took a bit of tin foil, balled it up and used it to remove the rust. Apparently, a lot of bikers used to do this to clean up the chrome on their Harleys.
Here is a pic of one of the wheels. You can see there's scaring done from the rust so even if I polished these guys up, I'd still have rust.

After the rub down with the foil, I took a deck of cards and over lapped them. It's easier than using tape and keeps it all contained. Here are pics of a wheel with the cards. One is cleaned up with foil and the other is the same wheel with one coat of Plastidip. You can see that one coat does a lot!

If you look hard enough, you can see that I definitely needed more coats. You can also see that the finish is matte so if that's what you want, no need to use the clear coat.

I sprayed a total of 4 coats on each wheel. After that, I ran 2 coats of clear. Here is after 1 coat of clear.

A little bit more rust needs to go off the lip but here is the finished product. Again, 4 coats of plastidip, 2 coats of clear!

I didn't get pictures of it but I also sprayed the lugnuts with plastidip. I stood them up and shot them with one coat of each to match the wheels. I didn't put anthing on the part of the lugnut that comes in contact with the wheel itself.
Mounted up!

It's lasted almost a year now and the even the lugnuts have survived getting hit with an impact gun from time to time.
