i checked out the tech library but it really didnt give me the answer.

can anybody give me answers please . i want to see if i can put a mustang 5.0 t5 tranny on my 4.0 SOHC. my friend has one on his 4.0 OHV.
is there any change on the 4.0 sohc and the 4.0 ohv bellhousing bolt pattern on the engines?

same bolt pattern.

but your buddy must be using an adapter plate, as the 5.0's and 4.0's dont have the same bolt pattern.

Apparently they are the same minus one bolt.

I looked into an adapter for my 2.9L (same bell pattern as the OHV) to T-5, I think I was quoted over $600. I don't think advanced adapters is making them anymore, but I guess you could try there.

Another option is the T-4 and 2.8L bellhousing from an early Mustang II, apparently the T-4 bell can be adapted to the T-5 trans, and the 2.8L/2.9L/4.0L OHV share the same bell pattern. As far as that... I have no other info on swapping over as I never followed through since I've decided my next swap will be a V8.

I think I found a used bell for $50, but I can't remember where..

well think about this, the newer mustangs use the same 4.0 SOHC engine that our rangers use... that means that the T5 they use has a 4.0L bellhousing on it. So just find a T5 or at least the bellhousing from a 4.0L V6 mustang.

The Mustang quit using the t-5 many, many years ago. Early to mid nineties. Long before they ever got a 4.0.
Although that is the right track though. Find someone that pulled the v-6 drivetrain from a newer mustang and Installed a v-8. Use that trans (whatever it is).
The t-5 isn't that great of a trans, Just slightly tougher than the M5R1.

WRONG!!! The v8 mustangs quit using the T5, but the v6 mustangs did NOT! Infact, the 2005+ still use the T5. It now has the new bellhousing to mate to the SOHC 4.0 and a internal slave cylinder as opposed to the 2004 and older cable clutch system.

Ooooh... a T5 w/ mechanical clutch... that would be nice... especially on a 2.3L Turbo... any chance?:icon_confused:

That is good info, The little that I know about Mustangs is all v-8. I had NO idea they would still be using the t-5.

Fixin, The turbo coupe t-birds from the 80's all had t-5s and cable clutchs (unless they were automatic).

2 years of the turbocoupe used a hydraulic bellhousing. It was either 86-87 or 87-88, i forget which. Those are the bellhousings that are sought after for ranger 2.3T swaps that use the T-5 because of the ease of installation.

I thought there were some (later?) years of T-coupe that used the M5R2??

Which is considered the stronger between M5R2 and T-5???

i would suggest checking the gear ratios. i chose not to do the swap because the ranger trans has a lower first gear.

You may be thinking of the T-bird Supercoupe. It was a Eaton supercharger bolted to a beefed-up 3.8L V-6 block. They were made 1989-1995 with and aod or 5spd. and were rated around 230HP and 300TQ. Had one. It was fun!:icon_thumby:

so would a c4 bolt to a 4.0?

Some of the bronco II models had a C-5. Sooo if the C-4 and C-5 can use the same bellhousing..... Asuming the 2.8, 2.9 & 4.0 all have the same bolt pattern then you could just use the C-5 B2 bellhousing on a C-4. In theory. lol

Good call! All the new 2005 Mustangs and newer use the hydraulic system vs the cable system. Hard to keep up with all the changes.
