Well I have officially began a V8 build for my Ranger.

Earlier this year I found a 1966 289 short block and took it into a machine shop for cleaning, inspection and necessary machining. It all checked out good but needed to be machined 0.030 over to clean up some rust in the cylinders. The crank had to go 0.010 under but that is fine for my intentions as a mild street engine.

I got a sealed power engine kit from Summit with flat top forged pistons. A Lunati cam, lifters, springs, caps, and keepers will replace the stock valvetrain except for the rockers and pushrods.

An Edlebrock F4B intake (Cobra intake) was found and will ride on top with a Holley 4160 series carb.

I picked up a set of 69 302 heads with 58cc chambers, they are in the shop now getting a 3 angle valve job and all the new parts installed.

A double sump oil pan was found on ebay and I need to modify it to accept an in the pan dip stick but I am waiting on some advance adapters headers to arrive to place the dip stick.

An MSD Pro-Billet distributor with a pertronix module will send the power to the sparkplugs.

I am also going to run a noisy timing gear set not a chain. Had to modify the front cover to fit the gears.

The remainder of the parts will be pretty much standard.

Still need to locate all of the accessory brackets (alternator, power steering, a/c), a transmission (C-4 or C-6), torque converter, drive shaft, and all of the small stuff. So there is a lot to do yet and for me to figure out as I go along. So I am hoping this awesome "family" here at TRS can help out along the way as I run into road-blocks.

Here are a few pics of the progress so far:

So that is the introduction . . . I will post more as I go along especially my questions for my year model and the particular swap I am doing.:icon_thumby:

My 351W is painted the same color. I think Ford Blue is the way to go with all sbf engines IMO. This is shaping up to be something NICE.

Yes sir DG - my county does not require emissions just road safety check. So I can run a carb and almost straight pipes - cats not required LOL!

UPDATE:

Took a major leap forward. When I bought my initial 289 it was a short block at best and was missing a lot but I could not pass it up for $100. So last night a good friend helped me bring home a donor motor and trans I found on Craigslist for $400. Complete 65 289 with a C4 attached to it. Have not cracked it open yet but it looks clean and the trans fluid is not burnt - so far so good!

Also got my adapter heads in recently thanks to Chris Mitchell!!!

The donor engine will supply me with all the bolts I need to put mine together and some accessories which I do not have yet. Plus now I have the trans I wanted with the correct bell housing.

Whoaaaaa....engine flashbacks to my high school days.....

and purdy heddas!!!

EDIT: WAIT a minute.....so you guys talked me into putting dual cats on my exhaust system to clean up the air...and now you don't hafta? But seriously....I didn't need mufflers benind the cats...it sounds great like it is....

What gear drive are you using? Noisy or quiet and what brand?

DG - There are only a handful of counties in Texas that do not require emissions testing and I moved in to one last year otherwise I would have to run all of the necessary BS to pass emissions.

Running a noisy gear drive and I am not sure what brand. eBay seller said it was by Pro Comp and not the same Pro Comp that does tires and lights. But it runs about $90 for the small block Ford.

Got the donor engine tore down last night and getting parts sorted out. Also found out the trans is not a C4, it is an AOD from an 83 F150 - so I am a little more excited about that since it is a 4 speed and has overdrive. That will get a rebuild before it goes back in. Best part is that all of the necessary parts are there - torque converter, flex plate, engine plate, and starter. No need to scavenge for them - but I do need a TV cable/rod!

AOD and C4 are the same case. Just like you said though the AOD is a 4 speed. Thanks for the info on the Gear Drive.

Not true - the AOD has a fixed bell housing and the C4 bell housing is removable. Also the C4 has externally accessed servos which the AOD does not.

Manual or bust IMO.

I was going to, but the times I get into traffic in the DFW metroplex a manual is total terror. So I have decided to go auto!

I have a 5 speed now with my 4.0 . . .
