Hi, I have a 88 ranger 2.9l 5spd with idle problems. It starts fine but lopes and stalls at low speeds and idle, I have checkd all vac hoses and found no leaks. I have heard it may be the fuel preasure regulator wich I will be checking soon. Are there any other things i might look for to resolve this problem? (note: this is my daily driver and need this fixd asap!) Any help is greatly apreciated, thanks!

Thanks for the advice, I did check the grounds and didnt find any problems. however Im un clear of the IAC and where it is located does it go by any other names? I couldnt find it in my manual so im stumpd again.

Idle Air Control valve.
Its located ( while facing the engine from the front of the truck ) on the upper intake plenum on the left hand side of the motor.

Also check the positive idle stop. I had a similar problem especially when starting the engine after it had cooled down. The engine coolant sensor ( the two wire sensor at the front of the engine next to the thermostat housing) on the same side as the IAC, controls the idle speed when the engine is cold and also works in conjunction with the TPI and IAC. I had the stop adjusted too high. That also caused the engine to surge when first starting after the engine was at operating temperature.

I had the same problem with my 1987 2.9 that took me over a month to resolve. I changed every sensor, IAC, O-2 sensor, egr valve and solinoid plus the ignition coil and engine coolant sensor. I had good fuel pressure, no leak at the pressure regulator. It ran pretty good after warming up to operating temp but still didn't have good acceleration.

I finally discovered a split in the EGR tube (after it finally blew through the insulation sleeve). The egr tube is no longer available except through pick and pull so I wrapped the split with an exhaust patch then coated it with JB Weld. I believe the egr was drawing outside air into the intake manifold through the split causing the problem. I now have good starts, smooth idling and rapid acceleration.
