What was an awesome day, turned sour at about 5 pm, then Bronco got left in the woods after a failed removal attempt.

After this small hole, we met a large hole, and gave up trying to drag the trailer throught at about 11pm. So, I am at work, and Bronco is on the trailer in the woods.

Nice skid setup you have there! Was that drill steel you used for rad arms? That really looks a lot like what we wheel up here. Where are all the mosquitos? LOL!

What you mean drill steel? It was hex shaft, scraped parts from one of our combines, lol. It is a drive shaft for 3 spaced out chains. I am pretty sure it's more than mild steel. But is not the problem. The ford rad are split, not even right beside a weld or anything. Whateve' They're getting overbuilt now!!!
The mosquitoes where there. They almost carried us back to the hive just before it got dark.

The problem wasn't so much that is was a Chevy. It did well. It has incredibly useless tires on it thought.

IDK what my plan is yet.
A: rebuild rad arm. Go out and put it back on with the truck on the trailer. Drive home.
B: use a log (like a rad arm) and my winch to keep the axle stable, limp out with assistance.
C: use dads Kabota tractor to go retrieve the whole mess. 2.5-3 hours roading to get there with the tractor. I am quite confident the tractor can yank all that out.
 
Rock drills, like they use in mining, are hex shaped and about that size. Look around any old hard rock mining operation and you will see it.
 
You created a weak link in the area that the stock rad arm met the extension piece, IMHO. If it was me, I'd plate the back of the stock radius arm and run it up over the end of the extension. Mine were done sorta that way (I have square stock for the extensions).

I don't think trying to wedge a log in there and use the winch to hold the axle forward will work well for trying to limp out unless you have a front locker and can crawl, it might work then, but your problem is not going to be so much the axle moving front to back as it trying to wrap up or down. That could tear your axle pivot apart. (I've tried, a front locker and going straight on a fairly flat surface is do-able in 4low an crawling, I doubt anything more than that is possible without tearing stuff up). If you want to limp it out, patch the arm back together and stick it back on.

The rad arm is going to get plated and a gusset on the top.
My plan concerning the log is to run the winch under the frame, through a snatch block on the back bumper back to the axle. Using a log like a rad arm behind the axle to push against the frame. The biggest concern with limping it (IMO) is the twisting action of the axle, that is not really constrained by anything, so yes, drop bracket would see damage there.
IDK, it's obvioiusly a mess. I think rad arm repair is looking the best right now.

Agreed. I've given thought a couple times now that what would likely work great in a situation like that is either a wrecker built to off-road specs or a trailer built for pulling back trails to retrieve something (or a combo of the two). Once I get some of my other projects out of the way I'm liable to get started on doing just that.:D:icon_welder:

Hmmm. An off road recovery division of AAA. That could be an interesting business idea.

Just for that I'm gonna move to Fl and open up another franchise. :icon_twisted:
