Fuel Issue

I've got an 86 4cyl/5 speed that I picked up on the cheap for a DD. I threw a battery in it, some fresh gas and changed the fuel filter. After a few tries it started and idled fine for about 15 seconds, then it just died. I'm hearing some gurgling in tank/from the lines/rail mounted pump along with the fuel pump whine. I pulled the #1 plug out and it smelled like gas, but other than a few sputters it won't do anything. Before I start throwing more parts at it, does anyone have any ideas?

kinda sounds like the fuel pump could be wasted, how much fuel pressure do you have?,if its injected you need 35-42 psi to operate the injectors correctly,if carbed then its about 5-8 psi, just because you can hear the pump dosent mean its working right, but it does sound like a fuel issue.

Unplugged the FPR and it runs. I guess I'm going to start there since it's cheaper than a pump. There's a TB on the truck from the previous owner marked "2.3L Truck". It's slightly larger than the factory one (which I found in the engine bay) but I can't get the linkage off of the current TB to put the original back on. Other than removing the E-clip is there anything to it besides prying it off? It won't budge.

mine has a kind of like a C clip at the end of the cable,it looks like you bacically just pry it off,you might wanna pull the E clip first,if somebody knows better they might wanna chime in.

Pulled actual throttle linkages, the E clip, and the washer behind it off. No luck on getting the likage brackettry to come off though.

Replaced the FPR. No luck. It'll run on carb cleaner so I'm not getting fuel somehow. Any ideas?

Check your fuel pressure

Well, it's obviously not getting enough. There was fuel in the rail when I did the FPR, and it sputters at first like it's going to crank and run. Without renting the gauge, I have no way to check it. Trying to get some sort of ideas on this before I keep spending money. Should the pump on the rail be noticably louder than the one in the tank? I can hear a faint hum from the tank but the one on the rail is loud.

My pump on the rail is not really loud.

Was the filter you pulled off completely clogged?
If so you might want to pull the new one of and check it.

If you hear the pump powering on that eliminates a lot of common fuel pump issues like relay, and crash switch.

I suggested checking pressure because your pump could be weak and on it's way out out.

I bet it's the pump but you can't be certain without putting a gauge on it.

I'll pull the filter off again and see what it looks like. When I replaced the old one, there was a buildup of pressure behind it. I did pull the pump side line off first so I don't know if the other side had pressure or not. I guess I'll pull the rail side line off first this time and see if that will tell me anything.
