Well If you have read my other thread you will understand that I had a weak 4.0 tranny blow on me. I am not wanting to spend $800-$1250 on a rebuild plus $300 for a clutch kit with a slave cylinder. I really want to put in a c-4 becuase its stronger and I wouldn't mind having a automatic. I have searched here and some of the other forums and it seems "C4" and "C-4" are too short of terms to search. When I search for for transmission swap all I get is info on swapping automatic to manuals and vise versa, nothing on C-4's. I have a 97 extra cab ranger with a two piece drive shaft. It is also 2wd. I have a couple questions.

What is needed to swap a C-4 into my 4.0 ranger?

Do I need to get a special bell housing?

Well a C-4 bolt into my aftermarket transmission cross brace?

Do I have to fab up a mount and bolt in a trans cooler somewhere?

Is there needed to have any modifications to my drive shaft?

Any help is greatly appreciated. If you could also give me links to previous threads or other websites that would be a great help.

Thanks
-Mike

Dude, the 4.0 "closely" shares the bell housing bolt pattern as the 2.8. So close that it will bolt up and work. You will need a C4 transmission from either a Ford Pinto/Bobcat or a Mustang II that came with a 2.8. When getting the above mentioned transmission, you will need to get the ring gear, spacer and flywheel bolts.
Now, the 4.0's came with a 6 bolt or 8 bolt crankshaft. If yours matches up with the one from the 2.8, you can use it. If not, your gonna have to see if the one from a 4.0 will fit. Both engines are internally balanced, so there shouldn't be an issue there.
As far as the trans mount, I'm unsure if you will need to relocate yours... but if you do, it's not gonna be rocket science.
The drive shaft should be a breeze too. Just make sure you get the yolk that came with the C4 and take some proper measurements for length. Take those measurements and that yolk to a drive line shop and explain what your trying to do. They should be able to help you out.
That's about as much as I know... Maybe someone else will pipe up and give some more information or correct any mistakes I may have made.

Oh.... I almost forgot.... you do realize that with a C4, you won't have any overdrive???
