  1. Duratec 5R bellhousing Compatibility

I have a Duratec with M5R1 in an off topic vehicle and am thinking of switching to automatic. My ECM is a Megasquirt, so controlling the 5R is pretty much out of the question. Can the 5R bell be used to install other transmission? Bill
  2. 03 Duratec Won't Start, misfires

Black, fouled plugs indicate too much fuel. So the question becomes what would cause the computer to dump fuel into the engine while cranking? The only thing I can think of is a bad or disconnected sensor. Unfortunately, that's as far as I can extend my"wisdom". The manifold absolute...
  3. intake manifold runner control

Not here. I have MegaSquirt to drive me crazy. Bill
  4. 2.3l no compression

There are only two possible problems. Wrong cam timing or wrong valve clearance. Retime the cams, then double check your valve adjustment proceedure. Bill
  5. aluminum 4 cylinder

My Fusion 2.5 (bored and stroked 2.3 with balance shafts) weighs in at 320 pounds, ready to bolt to the M5R1 and install. The tranny weigh 95 pounds with a remote shifter. This engine has homemade intake and exhaust manifolds as it is in a Sunbeam Alpine and space is very tight. The intake is...
  6. M5R1 5th gear whine

At first I thought it was the rearend, except it whines almost all of the time when at highway speed. No whine in 4th. Well, there is, but totally different. Much quieter and more of a rear end whine. The tranny is a 2004, behind a Duratec. It is from a junkyard, supposed to have about...
  7. 2002 head gasket change problem?

I took my pulley off. What a MFer! Ended up cutting it about 95% of the way, and then pryed it off. It is pressed on, but man, is it tight. 'Bout dove me crazy trying to determine what the thread in the shaft was, can't remember the size, but its a good 'ole SAE! Either 5/16" or 3/8". No...
  8. Made in USA Slave

I just bought a Wagner slave cylinder at O'Reilly Auto. The base of the casting says "Made in USA". It has the sleeve. The bearing is SKF, made in Argentina. They do not have them in stock. In fact, it was ordered from Wagner, took 3 days for it to arrive, $85. Bill
  9. Larger oil filers

If you will look on the base of the filter, the thread size is stamped right into the steel. Every filter I have looked at has this. Some are metric, some are still S.A.E. Most Ford filters are 3/4", 16 tpi. Just measure the diameter of the filter base, go to an auto parts store and start...
  10. Three Piece Synchronizer

Okay, after much angst and confusion on my part (got to thinking the 3-4 gears were 1-2) I have discovered my problem is the three piece 2nd gear synchro. The rebuild kit I bought is for the old design with four identical brass rings. I have an older 2.3 M5 that I can rob for the 1-2 parts and...
  11. M5R1 Rebuild Problems

In the middle of rebuilding a Duratec M5 and am having problems. The main shaft has been removed form the case, but we can't budge the 3-4 synchronizer hub and cannot see the problem. The spilt ring keeper has been removed. Do I need to put it in a press or is it supposed to slide off? Hate...
  12. 2.3 Ranger losing power when accelerating

Yes, it sounds electrical in nature. Ignition spark to be more precise. Bad high tension (spark) components can function okay under light load, but break down under load, causing a miss. Most likely culprit is plugs and plug wires. How many miles since they were changed? If they are good...
  13. Injectors and mass air flow

My Duratec does not have a MAF. It uses a MAP, which would not have to be swapped out. Why do you want bigger injectors? The stock injectors are good for something like 175 hp. Bill
  14. M5R1- Repair or Replace

I have installed a Duratec 2.3 and matching M5 into a Sunbeam Alpine. Unfortunately, 2nd gear has practically no synchronizer left. The initial fill was with Mercon V synthetic, then switched to Redline MT90. There was a slight improvement, but double clutching is still necessary. Otherwise...
  15. duratec focus same engine as a duratec ranger?

Depends on what you want to do. I think all internal components can be interchanged. External stuff will interchange and you can swap heads, manifolds, etc. But computer compatibility would probably become an issue with manifold swapping and "packaging" issues might be deadly. Motor mount...
