94' Cam Question.

I Used to have an account here; wasn't a major poster (Theforerangerman or something akin) but I do have a question, I have a stock 94 4.0l, I'm wondering what's the most efficient aftermarket cam available performance-wise, I plan on getting an aftermarket intake and putting the Kurtz Kustomz CAI system on, and I plan on putting an aftermarket set of ported heads later down the road, But my real question is, for a stock 4.0l what would be the best aftermarket cam? I searched the forums here and looked for 10 pages and couldn't find a straight answer, So I figured I'd ask haha. Thanks for any help guys
 
summitracing.com has the 410 cam and 422. these are the only cams made for the ohv. the 422 is a decent cam and still have a smooth idle. get a 422 cam and you will be set
 
Thanks man, I saw the 410 and 422 but I didn't know if my stock ranger would like the 422 as it says (for modded engines), However it only has a lift of 270 and 284, So I didn't think it'd be too bad on the stock block and heads, But I wanted to make sure, Appreciate it brother. :D

That's lobe lift - not valve lift. I would suggest you do a little more studying on valvetrain operation and design.

For a relatively stock engine without PCM tweaks, the 410 cam is much more efficient and capable - the 422 likes an engine that 'breathes' (not talking about a CAI).

oops, i meant i saw it had a .465/.500' valve lift :S sorry, But anyways, I plan on eventually having a ported intake, ported heads, bigger MAF (which i currently have and am about to install), a set of jba headers, hi flow cat, and I was just trying to make sure that i wouldn't be slapping my pistons with that kind of lift on the stock 4.0 haha

but I appreciate the input and as for it being a completely stock engine I wouldn't need new pushrods' valve springs or anything like that with a 410? Guess this applies to the 422 too haha.

I was under the impression that the 422 was better suited for higher compression engines? and the springs needed to be set up with innner and outer. as for push rods, you better do more homework. I bet you will find they will need to be longer. I recently done the 410 build and can testify that I had to order new rods from smith brothers in Oregon. To understand this all you need to do is lay the stock cam beside the 410 and visualy compare the differences, then you will see why you need to replace the pushrods. As for doing your build I would think hard about also replaceing the lifters. better to start fresh and avoid lifter play with either of the 2 cams. One other thing... when i ws building this up and pricing out the shafts, i went to NAPA to price compare, and they told me that there is also another cam avaible for the 4.0L this one had a price sticker that went to the moon.

Haha, Cool, I was wondering if I should get new lifters but I was thinking the stock would suffice for awhile, But I'll definitely look into getting new lifters and pushrods now.
Were you referring to the 422 needed new springs or the 410? or both?

Camcraft has been known to have a grind for the 4.0 and Delta Camshafts (who sells the replacement rocker sets for the 4.0) also has a grind pretty close to the 410.

I have never see a cam swap in these engines (4.0 OHV) that didn't need longer pushrods - highly recommend that you get an adjustable pushrod from Smith Brothers for the 4.0 and set it for zero lash, then measure and add .035to the measurement for the proper length - most of the time this comes out to between 5.525 and 5.550 (depending on rockers, etc.

The stock springs will 'work' for the 410 cam, but its best to get a stronger spring as the ramp rates and lift are much more agressive than the stock cam. I always used to use Comp Cams 988 springs - the stock retainers will still work with these and no machining of the guides is necessary.

If you want even better flow - swap the stock 2 piece valves with good undercut stem valves from SI Valves.
