zf not going in reverse.....

It doesn't sound like a trans problem. If you put the trans in reverse then try to start the truck, will it creep? As if the clutch is not pressed all the way?

dont know i'll try that tomorrow and let u know........... but today when i went to back out of the driveway it went right in reverse after i pumped the clutch pedal first about fifteen times

theres your answer....still got air in the clutch.you say you've got the internal slave so this won't help you,but with the external slave i've had to remove the slave and tip it so the bleeder is at the highest point to get it bled before.

but perfection clutch has a video on youtube if you search "bleeding a hydraulic ranger clutch" , so now that everything is in the truck i pulled the quick disconnect off the internal slave and pushed the pedal and its firm after about 1/8" so im assuming there is no air in the master cylinder or clutch line so it must be in the slave, so i gravity bled the slave like the video says and it still isnt right i even gravity bleed a whole quart through the system and it still grinds when letting out the clutch after shifting into reverse. I'm wondering if it couldnt be a reverse synchro that went bad because i did get the trans out of a junkyard but everyone i talk to seems to think its an air issue, so i dont know......................maybe it has to be in a certain spot to stay in gear?

i pulled the quick disconnect fitting off the slave and then tried pushing the clutch pedal and it was very firm couldnt push it more than a quarter inch if i tried, and according to their video this tells you whether their is air in the master cylinder and line so then that leaves air being in only one thing the slave cylinder so i then gravity bled a quart of dot 3 through it and it still does the same thing so perfection says its a tranny problem but it just seems weird that the reverse synchro would be going out it is the least used out of all of them..............................

is it possible to rebuld the reverse gear and synchro myself or does that take special tools, and where can i get information on tear down of a zf s542, im pretty confident its something wrong with the trans....................

and it still grinds when letting out the clutch after shifting into reverse.

if you've already shifted into reverse and it grinds when letting the clutch out, thats a whole different story.i thought it was grinding trying to put it INTO reverse, which would be a clutch problem.if it's grinding after it has been shifted and you are engaging the clutch you have internal transmission problems, probably worn engagement dogs on the gear and dog ring.

but it just seems weird that the reverse synchro would be going out it is the least used out of all of them..............................

zf trannys are known for reverse problems.i've rebuilt plenty of them,as for special tools you need a shop press and bearing splitter-otherwise common hand tools and common sense should suffice.just keep track of how things came apart and make sure engagement rings go back in the same direction they came out(a paint pen is very usefull at this point to mark parts).good luck.
