Your request for a factory rock crawler/trail truck have been heard

They can be bought street legal in some states, and then transferred to your state as street legal. Lots of people are doing it. They also very capable offroad for what they are, and the aftermarket is adding more cool parts all the time. I'd LOVE to have one.

They're everything I've always wanted in a 4x4 daily. Manual trans, manual transfer case, small turbo diesel, simple suspension using leaf springs, etc..

I like what this guy has done with his.

I like all that stuff to, but with a CJ you can have a 304, or if youre real froggy a 350 SBC or 401 amc.

And wasn't the tremor originally a street truck package that just had a big stereo system?
Yes, and now they've ruined that name too.
I know automakers have to get copyrights to get names, but couldn't they have at least used a more appropriate name. Name it what it is , the "King Ranch High Rider"

Forget a CJ, for $16k you are well into TJ territory.

I parked a nice CJ at a show and shine last night, I gotta say it was cool how they are put together. It still had a 304 which was pretty neat too.

You'd pick a TJ over a CJ?

Not me. Not a chance in hell.

But yes nice, unmodified CJs are rare these days. If i ever came across a deal on one itd be in my driveway even if it had a buick V6 and an auto.

Depends.

Like last night as I kept gawking at the CJ-5 I thought to myself it would be an awesome local cruiser-trail/trailer queen. Can't hardly weigh anything, flip the windshield down and go. My Ranger hauls like the 4k lb brick that it is.

But like a TJ, suspension is better for driving and wheeling... so maybe it wouldn't need hauled as much.

And then there is the cheaper redheaded stepchild... the YJ which is kind of a mix of both.

Dad had a CJ-2A, I wish I had the money to buy it when he sold it. Willys Go-Devil was stuck from sitting but it was solid and complete. It was practically asking for a repower/small lift and olive drab paintjob. It even had a bullet hole in front of the door opening.

Ford executives say 70 percent of customers accessorize their trucks, spending anywhere from about $2,000 to $10,000 or more. Their research shows 15 percent of F-250 and F-350 owners take off their factory wheels and tires within the first six months and buy more capable off-road wheels and tires. Some put lift kits on, or suspension upgrades.

I wonder if they realize that Ford Ranger owners modify their trucks as well?

I don't even know how to feel about trucks anymore. New ones are really expensive. I'm tired of 4x4's with vacuum actuated hubs. More and more electronics means more problems later. I'm ready to ditch my 2016 Expedition for a late 80's to early 90's fullsize Bronco.

I want to see a manufacture offer a no-frills midsize truck with manual hubs, manual transmission, and a manual transfer case.

This is why I'm fairly confident my 09 will be the last new truck I buy. Obviously my truck isn't a offroad rig but I literally only bought it because I was able to get a new truck with zero options. Rubber floors, manual windows, basic radio etc. There's just nothing out there thats a true stripped down basic utility truck anymore. Why buy a new truck full of options I either won't ever use, or with features I will replace and upgrade anyway. If I'm gonna spend 40k or more on a truck, getting a cheap older truck and using the extra cash building it exactly how I want is a much more viable option then buying new.

I just want real wheel bearings again.

5.4 swapping a 3/4 ton bullnose is still appealing too...

If youre ruining an old truck with a modern drivetrain why not go whole hog and run a 6.8? They cant be much longer then a 300....

Don’t sound like an 8. 6.2 would be better but a lot more complex on the wiring end of it.

I don’t think I would be ruining it any more than ford did with its 150hp emissions choked non overdrive power trains.

150hp? Yeah if its a inline 6. The 351 had pretty close to the same torque as a 2V 5.4 and dont even throw the 460 in it cause youll lose.

Yep... in 1996.

Depends what your going for. Straight up big truck towing the 460 is a beast. But it would be low on my list for offroad trail truck engine. It's heavy, and not exactly "peppy" because its just a low rpm, slow revver with gobs off torque. Aka a true truck engine... but offroad rigs are different.

Depends on the wheeling you plan on doing.

Desert truck? No i wouldnt want a 460.

Mud truck? Yes because i could run high axle gears for wheelspeed at lower RPM, saving engine wear.

General trail truck? Eh maybe not in something smaller then a 3/4 ton.

Really even after the spark plug shooter heads to. Sure the 5.4 has more at peak but ill bet down in the useable ranges the 351 is right with it if not ahead,
