Well as you can see it looks like the backing plate has sheared away from the axle, see how the brake lines are twisted around the tubes. My questions- do i need a new axle or just a whole new break for this side? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Eh, you'll have to tear into it and see. I bet you just need a new backing plate on that side. Did it tear up the drum brakes too? If it was me, I would probably use this as an excuse to put all new brakes on the rear while I was in there, unless you just did that...

I've also never seen that happen in my life. What were you doing?

iI guess i forgot to release the parking brake... gave it some gas and CLUNK!!
The backing plate is connected to axle shaft...

Your backing plate should be bolted to the axle tube, not the shaft.

Ouch. From the looks of things you can probably get away with just the whole backing plate assembly. Did you have it in 4LO?? I have forgotten about the parking brake before but it's never done that!

Yep, it was in 4lo. Just got done fixing the shift motor and was checking it out....

wow i am surprised that was able to do that.

a friend managed to do it on a chevy K30 with a 14bolt and a 454 when the parking brake locked up on one side. it took about 30 seconds of solid skinny pedal to break it though.

that you were able to do it with a ranger is impressive.


you should very thouroghly inspect the other side aswell. that side let go first but the other side was also extremely close to breaking. you probably will only need the one brake plate, lines, pads on both sides are a good idea, and probably a spring kit.

this would be a good excuse to put an explorer 8.8 under it. wouldnt ever have this problem again!

Does an Explorer 8.8 have stronger backing plates? That doesn't seem to be a necessary modification.

Though it sounds likely the parking brake caused the failure, make sure there is no side-to-side play in the axleshafts. If there is, you have more to repair than just the brakes.

I got it apart this morning, set out for the J/Y but low and behold... nothing newer than a 94 and none with a 10" brake drum.
I then remembered the yard that is down in Columbia, SC. and they have it!! Gonna overnight it and for $50. They are the best, last time my drive shaft fell out they had one and overnight it to me for $130. The guy also said that the had a bunch of late model Rangers and Expo's.
The axle shafts didn't have any play in them and i inspected the other side and it's fine, so i got lucky there. As far as an expo axle, If it didn't require the hangers and mounts to be fabbed i probably would and the backing plates are the same so that wouldn't matter.

It was supprisingly easy, i wasn't gettin on it or nothing,, just gave it a little gas and that's all she wrote. Tire's never spun. Took all of 3 second to destroy that side.

So the bolt holes tore out of the plate?

FYI, Explorer drum backing plates won't fit they fit on the larger diameter axle tubes of an explorer.

Any Ranger with 10" drums '88-current (EXCEPT the 31-spline FX4-L2's)
has the same backing plate.

And if you really need one and there are no Rangers look for an Aerostar.

Essentially ALL Aerostar passenger vans, I.E. those with windows, will also use the correct 10" backing plate.

Thanks, i was pulling an expo's backing plate and thought it looked bigger than mine. Good thing the it wouldn't come out.
The bolts tore out of the backing plate and remained on the axle tube.
Well i wish i had known that earlier.
Maybe someone should make a sticky about interchangeable axles?

Yeah, it makes me nervous also! I am going to get some stands today.
The J/Y fell through so now i'll be pullin the whole axle.
