Wont go into gear (automatic)


It's some change, but if it was me, I'd rebuild it, with a new TC, as well as a new heavy duty oil cooler (since heat is what kills a trans)...Or do what I did and upgrade to a lot stronger and more reliable trans via V8 swap

It sounds like a bad or broken pump. On the torque converter there are 2 flat spots that engage the pump gears when installed properly. This provides a mechanical connection from the flywheel to the pump. IF the torque converter is not properly installed when installing the trans it will break the pump gear. When bolting up the trans check the converter that it easily rocks in the in the stud holes. Regardless a quality reman trans is the best option. Many of the weak links in the trans will be repaired or replaced BUT many of us cant afford that and have to go to the Junk yard and hope for the best.
 
Well if im gunna v8 anything, its going to be my ranger. but damn. I didnt wanna have to rebuid it cause i dont have any money to throw in that thing right now. i know getting them rebuilt at a shop around here is about a thousand bucks. i only paid 500 for the whole explorer and its in very nice body condition. guess i gotta figure out if its worth saving up for or just selling the freaking thing.
 
I understand $$ is tight, it is with everyone, you can get a JY trans, but be prepared to save up for a rebuild, as the JY unit could go south on you at any time, just make sure when you get the JY trans you get the TC to go with it :icon_thumby:

would it be possible to just replace the pump and the tc?

BTW this thing is sitting inside my buddies shop but hes getting tired of it taking up his space
 
For the price your gonna pay for the pump and TC, you can get a JY trans and won't have to install the pump, which can sometimes be tricky, depending on trannies..
