Torque. The 300 puts out diesel numbers.

The 300 is a relatively reliable gasser, but it will never compare to a diesel. Maybe a bottom of the barrel, non- intercooled, VE pump, factory stock 4BT. (Makes 265 lb-ft @ 1700 RPM) A P-pump, intercooled 4BTA makes about 325 lb-ft…
And we’re still comparing it to a 4 cylinder.

265lb-ft at 2000rpm (in 1996) comes at a cost...
The 1996 351W was making 325ish at 2200 RPM and if I remember right, it was about 300 lb-ft at 2000. I don’t really understand where this “the 300 makes so much torque” BS came from. It must be that everyone compared it to the 70’s 302, because the 351W stomps it in every way.

Yes, the 351 makes more torque, at a little higher rpm. It also puts out a higher HP number, much more in line with its displacement.

The 300 puts out a measly 150-ish HP but 265 for torque. It’s the big disparity between those numbers and the fact that it pulls like a farm tractor that make people compare it to a diesel.
