wire size

Im wiring in some lights and combined they draw about 26 amps. I'm going to be using 12 guage wire for the hot wires going to the lamps, but for my ground wire do I have to use the same size wire or can I be using a smaller wire?

Ground should be the metal bumper or bracket etc. that the lights are bolted to.

If a wire is needed to reach a ground, then yes, it should be at least the same size as your hot lead.
