Yes to all of the above. I've been driving the Ranger and/or my old Izuzu up north here in Minnesota. Niether has even got stuck. I like to keep a few bags of pea gravel in the back. I think it grabs better than sand. The bags come in 40lb sizes, easier to handle and less messy. Should I ever get stuck, I will crack open the entire bag and just leave it behind.
The Ranger has a new Torsen limited slip which does rather well. I do not need snow tires. My Cooper All Terrains could be better, so I think I'm going to buy wider all terrain tires to mount on the back, maybe 11 1/2.
I put a small winch in the front and mounted it behind the front valance. It helped a buddy once. Since mine was originally an Edge, I added tow loops too. Extra fog lights also help.
Four wheel drive would have been better, but I spent a long time shopping for one that was in decent shape. Everybody that has one just doesn't want to give theirs up.
