one of the drivers that works for us had us do a maintinence inspection on her bus (1995 chevy 6.2l diesel bus) she said it was running like crap and overheating real bad. upon inspection i noticed a real loud pinging sound so i thought it was a sticky valve, no biggy. but as the temp rose to well over 260 we decided it was a cracked cylinder head once again (3rd one this year) well i got some photos to depict what we found.

Who needs an engine stand when you have a forklift?

As you can see around the larger valve there has been some coolant leaking into the combustion chamber. And at the top of the cylinder impression there is a lot of buildup from the coolant burning

This is the cause of all the problems. First pic is of what the piston should look like and the second one is of what happens when a wingnut challenges a piston to a game of "who can last longer"

Hmmm...looks like the piston won.

Wow, How in the world did it get in there.. Or do we want to know?

its the wing nut that holds the air cleaner in to the intake, and i have no freaking idea how it happened but that piston is going on my "crap happens" wall.

haha, how would it ever get past the intake valve...thats a pritty neet one. My Engines proff at school has a piston from a 7.3ltr turbo, the intake valve keeper went for a krap, the valve droped into the cylinder, managed to flip around without bending, and went through the piston, stem first.

I have a pretty sweet piston from a 351C I blew up. The rod broke in half, and its on my 'cool stuff' shelf.

My dad has a JD 4020 cylinder head that the head of the valve got broken off and rattled around inside of, the piston looked like the one shown. The valve head ended up being stuffed sideways halfway through the seat it left.

I do not have a pic, but on a shelf above me right now is a piston from my jetski, the one that was still in one piece, after the pin let go on the other one at 7000 rpm. :icon_hornsup:
Lots of jagged pieces of metal welded in and sticking out at all sorts of angles.
I use it for a paperweight.

I've got a bent rod from my 4.0L. I dove into a puddle a little to hard and tried to run the truck on H2O. Didn't work out well....
Then I drove it knocking like a SOB for 50-70 miles. Ran fine just sounded like a diesel :).

That's 21.3-1, not 14-1. It's a straight shot down down that thing into the engine. There's obviously no carb in the way. A Christmas turkey could fit into the engine with the lid off the filter.

That's an awesome puller for a van motor. Of course it requires a hell of a forklift.

your right. with the air filter off you van fit a volly ball in the intake opining

at work we had a brand spanking new 4.3L that injested a whiz nut while the assembler was installing the intake manifold or fuel system, so much for that $2000 engine... cracked the block had maybe 2 minutes on it

then there's the 502 that stuck a valve and put it through the piston...

and the engine (5.7L multi port propane injection) I put an intake manifold on and there was apparently a washer in the manifold... luckily it just screwed up the piston and is back to running
