How can I remove a windshield without buying proper tools or calling a glass company?

For what the tools are worth just get it, but if your too cheap I've seen it done with the cable and pull handle from a hood pop latch.

I'm not too cheap. I was gonna scrap a cab today and my buddy at the last minute says he wants the windshield because his cracked. The only problem is it's already loaded on the trailer and ready to go to the big scrap heap in the sky.

If he wants it tell him to take it out...easy solution

If you want to get it out in one piece then the proper tool is the best way to go. Urethane is some tough stuff.

I saw a couple of mexicans at salvage using a speedometer cable to saw it out. Seems to have worked as it was gone when I came back by. I tried this later on, but as I was punching the hole to get the cable in, I cracked the glass.

I also saw one cutting the side door out of a van by cutting the sheet metal on the body with a hammer and chisel. He was taking hinges, door post, and all.

And, I saw a couple taking the front off of a car with a bumper jack, and a jack handle. Enterprising little devils, these mexicans.shady

well I spent about a 1/2 hour with a box cutter and the hood cable. Made it about halfway around and CRACK! Oh well off to the scrap yard. It was a learning experience and given another chance I would definetly call the pro's

Got the wire to cut out my windshield from my local NAPA parts store. Cost me about $10.00. It is a little rough so that it can cut the urethane. The hood cable is smooth.

I used a cable from an electric mirror off of a Cadillac. It worked like a charm. It was also the dead of summer (110 degrees), so the urethane was a bit softer. It's helps to have an extra hand too.

hacksaw blades don't flex that great. Remember theres a big lip around the edge of the glass.
