Basically, will an exploder hitch from a 1st gen fit on my 4x4 1988 ranger? I have gone to a few junk yards and not found a ranger hitch, but a few explorer hitches and I am wondering if they will work.

no it won't, not without some cut/weld

x's 2 on that, a exploder is a few inches wider in the rear section of the frame than a ranger.

This may help you out some, My dad used to have a 94 dodge ram 2wd(the body style up from the 90-92 or 93 i believe) he bought a reese hitch from advanced and then sold the truck a long time ago but kept the hitch, i was fiddling around one day with my 01 ranger i used to have and tried to see if it would fit. Well i figured out a way that it would fit. Instead of the hitch fitting the normal way, i unbolted both sides of the hitch and flipped them around so instead of the angle facing towards the besides they were facing each other, 2 of the holes lined up with stock bumper holes(had a body lift on it at the time) and just had to drill the other holes but it fit perfectly.
