if you've got limited slip it's just as good as many unmodified 4x4 drivetrains, since they often have open gears on both ends.
2 wheels of traction is 2 wheels of traction.
No, that's incorrect. An open axle gives exactly equal power to each wheel. It's either both are getting it, or none. As long as you don't slip a wheel, they are both doing equal work. With a 4x4, since the axles are geared together, you will have a lot harder time slipping a wheel. Also, the front driving axle has a lot more weight than the rear with an empty truck. A front wheel drive Ranger would be superior to the RWD Rangers in traction because it's 1,000# heavier over the drive wheels.
A 4x2 with a locker is nowhere near as good as a 4x4 with 2 open axles. I've experienced this many times in the 12 years I've been going up into my woods for firewood to heat my house, with a variety of vehicles. My B2--heavier in the rear by far than a Ranger--won't go up my hill in 2wd with a locker and 31" mud terrains. Every other stock 4x4 would easily go up in 4wd--even when my B2 had it's stock 205/75-15s and 2 open axles.
i was actually referring to mud and ice situations, where loss of traction is when, not if.
secondly, i was trying to make him feel better.
