Why can't we have an autobahn?

We could, be a good use of all the special express toll roads. Just require an endorsement on the license tied to the ez pass. Don’t need no Altimas with temporary tires and flapping bumpers screwing things up.

I love cruising at triple digit speeds, there are very few roads that are in good enough condition to do that mile after mile.
I'm sure my Ranger would cruise happily all day long at 80MPH. But it's not just that, not for me anyway. It's safety, stress free driving, not getting boxed in by a slow car in front of me and having a hot head driver riding my tail. My preference is a healthy, safe interval.

Do you really want a guy like me in a truck like mine hauling 90mph of ass around you and your family?

We’re not worried, you have a 2.9L… it won’t be able to get up to 90 MPH.

Sheeeit.

I had rusty #1 up there a few times when the speedo worked. Buried it at 85 it was still climbing....slowly...but surely lol.

I really don't care about going fast, just safe, and stress free. Personally I would be very happy if speed limits were set. I saw a semi jacknife on the expressway. It was a multicar pile up. No one behind him had anywhere to go.

I think the biggest problem is people and cell phones.

Hell...id be fine if the put everything back to 55 with strict enforcement

I think if they put cell service blockers, that would be awesome.

55mph would suck here. When the speed limit was 55, it took over 4 hours to get to houston and 4 hours to get to san antonio. Leaving texas going west was 14 hours and right now its down to 12 with the 70mph limit. Dallas no longer takes 8 hours to get to, which is nice.

Well that's the nice thing about multiple lanes. We all don't have to drive at the same speed.

I wonder how complicated it would be to make just the left lane have a significantly higher limit? Maybe with restrictions on use. Maybe an optional certification for each vehicle and driver. Obviously the logistics of it would be complex, but I think as a nation we could pull it off.

I think no. There's always a semi driver who wants to go one mile an hour faster than the semi in front of him. It's going to take hime two or three minutes to pass in the passing lane. The other problem is merging cars and trucks who do not enter the highway at cruising speed. So both trucks and cars need to move into the passing lane, often at every cloverleaf.

Maybe, but here in the USA you can travel hundreds of miles of bumper-to-bumper. I remember driving from Pittsburgh to Chicago bumper-to-bumper all of the way. That drive alone comes close to the entire length of Germany. I've encountered the same driving from Chicago to Detroit, from Boston to New York, or Boston to Niagra Falls. An extra lane or two would relieve congestion, allow for greater safety, and make for a more timely arrival.

Years ago, Boston expressways were so crowded, they changed the laws, allowing motorists to drive on the shoulders.
True, many highways could use an extra lane (or two).

@superj
GENIUS!!! I love this idea, if the phone is in motion, it does not work.

Wait untill the speed limiter rule gets passed. Its going to suck.

Currently alot of company trucks are governed at 65ish MPH. Which is what causes the backups. Guys like me that are governed at 75mph (or some guys without a governor period) can usually hit the left lane and get passed without holding up traffic.

But if they pass that law (right now 68mph is the number they seem stuck on) then its going to be an absolute mess.

Gaz mention that we put down 4" of concete while the Autobahn lputs down 18". Their roads last longer. Spreading all that traffic over more lanes also means the roads don't get beat up as much. Repair is another issue. With a minimum of three lanes, the roads could stay open all of the time.

I don't think they need to jam cell service, they just need to toughen laws against playing with them while driving and enforce them. If a cop sees a driver using a cell phone it would be an expensive traffic ticket. If phone use causes an accident, it's not an accident, it's careless and negligent operation with a big fine and loss of license. If anyone is hurt as a result, it's not an accident it's assault. If anyone dies it's at minimum manslaughter. Checking phone records after a wreck should be as automatic as checking for DWI. I'd rather have a drunk driving toward me than someone who's texting because the drunk might actually be looking where he's going.
