I just acquired an 88 2.9l RWD ranger. It has been sitting for 3 years. Well I got in and decided to test the breaks. (It is sitting on an incline and in gear so not moving) I pushed the break pedal in an it went strait to the floor and it made a sound like air was rushing out of the lines. Quite loudly. When i put the clutch in, obviously it started rolling down hill.

Checked the level, the fluid looked completely full.

Any Ideas.

Bleed the brakes. Maybe there's air trapped. Let me know if that solves your problem:icon_thumby:

well that AIR sound could have been the brake booster's residual vacuum, but it sounds like you haven't started the engine and it would be AMAZING if it held a vacuum for 3 years.

check for brake fluid leaks, sounds like a rotten master cylinder to me

IF you are refering to a situation where you have the engine running and you give the slightest touch to the brake pedal and you hear a great "whoosh!" and the pedal gets SUCKED to the floor...

That is a pretty classic brake booster failure.

The way a booster works is that there is vacuum on BOTH sides of the diaphram
and when you step on the pedal you let air IN to the "Back" side of the diaphram
and the atmosphere helps you push the pedal down.

when they sit for a long time the internal valve becomes stuck.

IF this is the case, the only "fix" is to replace it (the booster)

Sorry. Car has not been started in 3 years either.

Thanks for the advice.
