I hold 3 patents for inventions that I have come up with, manufacture, and sell. 2 are for steering parts for Dodge trucks. So far, Ive sold in the half million part range, and while Im no expert, I sort of know what Im talking about
I applied for the patents myself. Total investment was abot $3000 each. But the time it took, and the research I did could have been put into developing and marketing the products to the point I could have hired it done and still come out ahead.
Patents are fine, but unless you have a PILE of cash to back them up, they are pretty much useless. If your idea is good, someone is going to try to copy it. The Patent Office, the govt, nor anyone else is going to pay for fighting infringements. You are! And it costs a lot of time and money to go to court.
Honestly, if you have an idea that you think will sell, the best way is to work on it and perfect it in secret. Then advertise amd market the hell out of it, essentially flood the market off the bat. Make it be known YOU are the inventor and YOUR product is the first. Spend any extra time and money on advertising, it will pay off far better than any patent.
Also, most inventions have a lifespan of 5-10 yrs nowdays. Things are more fastpaced these days and customers are always on the lookout for the "latest/greatest" products.
