which m50d?

So what?

Use the gear that works best. Downshifting is entirely equivalent to a gear change, except in 1st gear.

rodger... more power is needed too. but i also lack the climbing power...

so again the m50d outta the 2.9 can be distinguished from the 4.0 m50d's how?

Yeah, there's no external visual differences I'm aware of.

You could try checking the ratio of input shaft rotations for 1 turn of the output shaft in 1st gear. The 4.0L ratio is 3.40:1 (or almost 3½ turns), vs the 2.9L version's 3.72:1 (about 3¾ turns).

BTW, regearing the axles DOES lessen the RPM gap between each gear when you shift, so it's definitely NOT the same thing as just downshifting. You'll have your 5 gear ratios closer together instead of only 3 or 4 wide-spaced ones.

thanks 4x4junkie, your knowledge overwhelms me. kinda common sense tho too.

lets change up the convo for just a sec... transfer cases. the 1350 is what i have stock right? the 1354 would be better why? and the manual vs electric means what? manual or locking hubs? if thats the case the manual is the way to go right? more solid engagment? plus i'm set up for manual anyways.

i won't have any problem mating my manual 1350 to the m50d?
