I am about to change my differential fluid in my truck. It's an 03 with the Ford 8.8 and 4:10 with limited slip. The manual calls for 80w-90 oil but after researching, I am seeing that many people are using different weights. Just wonder if anyone on here has recommendations for a certain weight.

i swapped out for the explorer rearend and the explorer book tells you to use 75w140. either one you use, if you don't get synthetic, remember to put in the friction modifier.

Any 90 weight such as 80w-90 or 75w-90 will be fine. There's not really any reason to use 140 weight. Some fluids such as Valvoline synthetic and Mboil 1 come with the friciton modifier already mixed in.

That pretty much sums it up. Personally though I dont use synthetic gear lube. It just doesnt seem thick enough to me to provide the protection that the gears need

The whole point of synthetic is to provide MORE protection. Synthetic isn't any thinner than conventional. A 90 weight oil is a 90 weight oil. But conventional works too...
