Good morning. Have 1997 4.0 4wd and need to find wiring harness for engine. Wires to spark plugs look too bad.
Any suggestions on where to find this?
I have a 3.0 2wd parts truck. Is it hard to build my own harness?
Thank you

I'm confused. Spark plugs wires are a common replacement item. The engine harness not so much.

As for building a harness, I'm gonna say it's one of those things that if you have to ask then you shouldn't try it. Besides the fact that RARELY is harness unrepairable. Maybe extensive mouse damage would get there. Or if the truck was left in a field with the hood off 20 years...

Show us some pictures of what you're working with.

Ok. Thank you. We are pretty much broke down on side of road right now so no time for pictures. Got this truck 3 months ago. Has broke down 5 times. We are sick of this and sick that a mechanic I thought was trustworthy took advantage of my trust. We are just trying to replace starter right now and very difficult but to get to. Went and bought a Hercules battery powered ratchet because we have little access to this nut. Sorry, off topic. Have a good one.

Your donor truck is of no use to you for wiring. 3.0 is different enough that it will not work well.

The starter on a 4.0 is very easy to replace. All you need in a pinch is a 13mm wrench for the mounting bolts but a deep 1/4 drive 13mm socket and a flex head 1/4 drive ratchet is better for the top bolt. I have done dozens of them... 10 minute job.

It is going to be very difficult to help you without more information or pictures. Broke down and bad wires could mean any one of 1000 things.

Well we are on the side of the road with no Jack stands so one bolt on the starter has been difficult. We are also senior citizens. But we have some tools that may help us and are going back to finish the job. Have a good day.

eBay usually has a good selection of harnesses.. being just the bay harness it makes it easier.

If you wanna spend on a brandy new harness though.. painless might be able to help you out.

Ok. I looked on painless today and only saw up to 1970s. I thought maybe painless didn't go up to 90s
Thank you.

I'm relatively sure they'll make custom harnesses for whatever somebody wants, not positive though. Worth a call or an email at least..

Interesting. Thank you. I will call them.

I just called painless. They said they don't do custom for something that new. I think they stop in the 1980.

Bummer! I know there's at least a few more companies that do custom harnesses.. can't think of their names at the moment though

May I ask what's wrong with your existing harness that makes you think you need a new one? It's an unusual problem to need to go that far.
