My wiring harness connector on my 1996 Ranger Splash 4.0L has a yellow/black wire coming out of it that has no place visible to go. the altenator is barely charging and I am wondering if this wire has something to do with it or is it just loose wire? I have the altenator hooked up from the wires coming out of the firewall but where the rest of the ignition wires plug is a y/b wire that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Can somebody help me on this?

I have wiring diagrams for a 96 Explorer. Should be same. But I won't be home for a couple hours yet.

Pictures showing what you have and where it is would be helpful to identify the harness connectors.

And please verify. Is it a yellow wire with black stripe? Or black wire with yellow stripe? It makes a difference.

I have not found your Y/Bk wire in the book. I believe you are referring to what us probably circuit 554 on pin 5 of connector 146 at the firewall. But I have not found that wire in any of the diagrams in the book, yet.

There is also a Y/Bk wire, circuit 850 which goes from the PCM to the ignition coil. That is a different wire that does NOT go through the firewall.

There should not be any Y/Bk wires associated with your charging circuit.

If You're looking at a Bk/Y wire in the engine bay, it is one of these;

Circuit 175, power for fog lights (that is probably totally contained within the bottom of the power distribution box where you can't see it)

Circuit 347, WOT for the AC system

Circuit 398, ground for the tach signal.

I only see yellow with white stripe and straight yellow.

Y/Bk is not part of the charging circuit. That part, we know. I've srarched my Explorer EVTM 5 times and have not yet discovered what circuit uses a Y/Bk wire going through the firewall connectors. OP has not replied with any further photos or info to help us narrow it down for him.

I know. Sometimes people need to see it with their own eyes so they know we are trying to help and possibly respond sooner.
