Where can I find FoMoCo's bolt-up-pattern designations?

You *KNOW* they exist. It may even be embedded in the engine and tranny product codes.

You *KNOW* when Ford's powerplant engineers send specs/RFQs/etc. to BW/Tremec/Mazda drivetrain engineers, they don't say "we need a new box with the following ratios, and a bolt-up that matches the XYZ product you did for us back in 1991..."

More probably they specify "bellhousing flange shall be patterned to mate with the FTZ-4381 reference engine jig..."

I just made up the FTZ #, but in practical terms, you're at a warehouse or boneyard, looking over a sea of pulled trannies, how do you verify/lookup which ones will work for your engine?

The 2.8, 2.9 and 4.0 share the same bellhousing pattern

The 2.0 and 2.3L are the same

The 289, 302, 351 are the same

429/460 are the same

Not quite sure which ones you are looking to know but those a few

i dont think its quite that simple. given the dizzying array of applications ford uses their engines and transmissions in.

look at the M5OD used in the ranger for example. you have 2wd cologne, 4wd cologne, 2wd vulcan, 4wd vulcan, 2wd lima, 4wd lima, 2wd duratech, 4wd duratech...and i believe there were a few minor upgrades in the mid 90
s that would almost double that list. and that doesnt include the other 14 transmission that were used over the years.

and thats only one vehicle.

i just think there are too many different combonations for it to be as simple as "x" bellhousing bolt pattern.

OK, then is there a detailed model # stamped on the tranny, which can be decoded, and will tell the tale of what it originally came out of?
