I am trying to build a 4x2 ranger as an off road truck and I have gotten bigger tires. I have on now 30 inch tire and feel no power in 5th gear.. my first thought is to swap in a different axel or at least the gears.. I am trying to find axel code 89 and was wondering if anyone knew what vehicles had it installed so I can go pull one from the junk yard.

If you are referring to the 4.56 geared axle, good luck. It was a unicorn and I've yet to find anyone who's actually seen one.

I'm trying to find the 4.10 so I guess also that axel code 87

Dead or dyin' 4cyl 4wd.

4.10 is sorta commonish in second gen Explorers if you are up for an axle swap...

Do you think that the 4.10 is okay for the 30 inch tires I have? I have axel code 84 right now but I just want something that is a little easier since I know that I would have to swap the whole axel of I wanted the 4.10 since it is also a disc brake rather than drum

4.10 is extremely common. In both 4wd and 2wd trucks. My 09 2wd has 4.10 (code 87). 4.10 will be ok with 30" tires. Definitely a huge improvement over 3.45 gears. The ideal axle would be to look for an F7 though for the limited slip, or even better an R7 which is the larger 8.8 4.10 limited slip.

I was planning on putting in a locker while I was changinf

If you are going to use a Lock-Rite locker find one with an open diff then.

Welcome to TRS :)

For off-road you want an R7 code, limited slip 4.10

Full time Lockers are not good for street use and worse in snow and icy conditions
Limited slip is the way to go, IMO, they are lockers that allow "slipping" when you go around a corner, a "locker" will drag or push one wheel when cornering because both axles HAVE TO turn at the same speed, which is great when driving in a straight line, but sucks when going around a corner, lol

I guess I am going to go with the R7 axel then.. what are they most common in.

Most common in 4x4 rangers with the 4.0 engine.

So for me to swap it would I need to replace the whole rear axel then or just the gears in the case?

If you get an F7 (7.5") you could just swap gears and carrier but you'd still need to buy a new install kit (bearings, shims, crush sleeve etc etc) and swapping gears is not just a bolt in process, you need special tools, take precise measurements, make adjustments. It is MUCH easier to swap the entire axle, in which case you could get an R7 (8.8").

If I swapped the stronger 8.8 in would I need to change anything on the transmission side of things? I want to make sure that when I go to the junk yard that it's a one stop trip for parts
