I spied a Gen II Ranger on the road (maybe a '90 or so) that had an interesting tailgate. Instead of the "deluxe" aluminum trim panel or the "base" metal tailgate (with F O R D embossed into the metal), this one had a smooth tailgate, with just the blue Ford oval in the lower right corner. It looked really nice!

I'd always assumed that under the aluminum panel was the embossed tailgate. Is it smooth underneath?

no, below the aluminum plate, there is the stamped FORD letters along with a bunch of holes to mount the aluminum sheet to. they sell new tailgates though that dont have any letters on them.

my first gen ranger 87, has a smooth tailgate, but the sec gen the 90 has the stamped FORD on it

Sounds like a 3rd gen + tailgate.

I wish I'd had a chance to stop and inspect it more closely, but unfortunately we were both driving at the time.
