What type of oil do you use???

I use Castrol GTX 20W-50. Its a 98' 4.0 4x4

10W-30 Castrol in it now. Got a good price on it. Prolly go to Valvoline....always used that.

well i used to used a lighter weight oil but my motor burns it up. 20w-50 doesn't burn near as quick.

5W 30 Castrol GTX In my Ranger


I posted this a little over a year ago:


A few weeks ago I posted the picture of my Ranger turning over 150K miles. Today, I changed the oil in it, and thought it was
interesting to see the color of the oil (at 3877 miles), and how much it has consumed. In the pictures, the screwdriver shows
where the oil level was the last time it was changed, using 4.5 QUARTS. There has been no oil added since it was
changed. I bought the truck with 36K miles on it, and since owning it, I've always maintained it myself, using the following:


1) Motorcraft or Purolator PAPER air filters (changed once a year)
2) ONLY Motorcraft oil filters, changed every oil change
2) Castrol GTX 5W30 (dino), changed between 3K and 4K miles

I haven't had my Ranger very long so I just did my first oil change recently. I just used the recommended crap - Motorcraft 5w-30 and Motorcraft filter. I haven't decided what I'm going to use next. Everyone seems to have an opinion or preference when it comes to oil, but my rule of thumb is to switch it up every change or every other change. I never use one particular brand for any length of time. That's just my 2¢.

Motorcraft FL-1A and Mobil1 10w-30.

I tend to avoid 5w-30 because it must have a greater precentage
of friction modifier added to it, but in this case the Mobil1 was FREE
so I used it, but it's what I would have picked anyway.
