I have a '99 Mazda B3000 Troy Lee Edition that has the 3.0 5-speed 2wd. I need do a good amount of work on it and want to swap it over to 4wd. I have found a doner 4wd ranger that I can use everything off of except the tans since its auto. What manual trans do I need for the swap?

The swap is going to include the motor since mine has around 450k on it and I'm going to rebuild it, but I'm keeping it a 3.0.

Technically you can use any M5OD 4x4 trans you like for this. All you actually need is the output shaft and extension housing.

If you don't want to have to go into it and just want something you can bolt up then you need one from a 4x4 3.0.

I may know a guy who has one.

If your state does emissions testing like NH does the VIN in the PCM and the VIN on the vehicle have to match.
I'd recommend against using a 3.0 in a 4x4 unless you live in flat country and don't load the truck. I've never liked the 4.0 SOHC because of it's unnecessary complexity but ordered my 2004 with a 4.0 after driving a regular, cab short box, 4x4, with a 5 speed 3.0 and 4.10 gears. It was gutless. My 2011 is also a 4.0.

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, you need the M5OD-R1 from a 1991 to 2008 3.0l Ranger 4x4 or 1994 to 2008 Mazda B3000 4x4
Must be from 3.0l, M5R1 doesn't have detachable bell housing

Some parts of PA do that, but the area he is in is a visual/gas cap test only, if anything.

So could I use my current trans and just rebuild it with the 4wd output shaft? I know my synchro's are going out so I would have to rebuild it anyways.

I was never a fan of the 4.0, my dad got a 2000 4.0 4wd and it started having engine and trans problems around 120k. Its mainly my daily driver/work truck. 4wd would just be nice for the snow. The original 3.0 I have currently has somewhere around 450k on it and still runs great.

And as ADSM08 said, my counties emissions are just visual and gas cap. But I also work at an inspection that my uncle just so happens to own. lol

Yes. The M5OD isn't a hard trans to work on either, you just need access to a press.

Awesome, I work in a shop any my mentor used to do nothing but rebuild trannies and said he would teach me. He just has to drive 2 hours to his old shop and get his tranny tools.

Honestly, there aren't even really any special tools needed. There is a big tube socket for the output shaft nut, but it can be gotten off without that. Torquing it is less easy, but when I did my one I just got it tight and put the steaked section back where it was, it's been fine for 5 years now.

Does anyone know if the 4.0 5 Speed 4wd used the same trans? We had one in the shop the other day for an oil change and the trans looked the same to me.

The 4.0s had a somewhat different version. In addition to the bell pattern being different the ratios on the first three gears were higher.

To do a 4x4 conversion the shafts are the same as the rest of them, so if you grab a 4.0 trans and use your gears you are still good.

Id just use a 2.9.
