Depending on your urgency, budget and use intensions, going through the engine thoroughly can be worth the time/effort/expense or an utter waste:
• if this just needs to run and get some work done, you could just use it as is and learn what is up with it as you go along (though the oil pump, water pump, timing set and rear main seal would be extremely prudent).
• If you are sending your daughter across the country to to college and need her to have a completely reliable power plant or desire new or better than OEM performance then, by all means go through it.
Either way, there are gamut of variables to consider with a cornecopia of potential outcomes.
