what size drill bit for 1/2' wheel studs?

Would anyone know what size drill bit i would need to go from 7/16 wheel studs to 1/2 inch? I drilled one out to 1/2 inch and there's no way the stud is going to fit. It's actually on a car i'm working on.

To clear the studs, maybe 9/16". What centers the wheel, the lug nuts or the center registry? What type of lug nuts you going to use? Acron type would need a counter sink bevel to them. My Weld and Creagers take the type nuts that go thru the wheel.

The studs center the wheel. and it uses acorn lug nuts. The stud fits through the 1/2 inch hole but the knurled part at the end has no chance of even smashing through it.

Now I understand, you want the hole size to press the knurled in. Here goes.

Wheel Studs—1/2"-20 x 3" Press-in, .615" dia. knurl and quick start dog end, fits most disc brake Fords front and rear and Chrysler front. Standard hole size: .606" to .613"

Wheel Studs, 1/2" -20 X 3" Press-in, .594" dia. knurl and quick start dog end, fits 1979-03 Mustang. Also has flat on head for front hubs with ABS. Standard hole size: .580".

Wheel Studs—1/2"-20 x 3" Press-in, .685" dia. knurl and quick start dog end, fits most Chrysler rear with 1/2" stud. Standard hole size: .676" to .683"

Wheel Studs—1/2"-20 x 3" Press-in, .563" dia. knurl and quick start dog end for use in 1/2" Frankland hubs. Standard hole size: .554" to .561"

thank you very much for posting that. We called around and the only thing we found was that the particualr brand of studs we bought measures at .582 on the knurl. Do you have anything on that size?

Check on Google for the manufacture of the studs for installation instructions? From looking at the sizing I posted, looks like they all had roughly a .010 interference fit. Also notice that the reccomended hole sized are plus/minus .004 in a couple of cases. Think the holes are usually reamed to size, better to be too small.

I did exactly that and called the place that made the studs. they told us the size in fractions but it turned out to be just as simple as a 9/16 bit which we had.
