It seems to be becoming a common thing on smaller trucks now. Chevy/GMC has it. The new Ranger is 6 lug. I can’t remember if the Tacoma or the Frontier are.

Generally for full size GM trucks, half ton 2wd are five lug, half ton 4wd are 6 lug and everything 3/4 ton+ are 8.

Goes back to at least the 70’s.

I once had an '85 bronco (9" in back, Dana 44 ttb in front) and it had 5 lugs....My '08 F150 2wd is 6 lug....my buddys newer Nissan Frontier 4wd is 6 lugs.
My Ford fusion is a 5 lug, on which the stock steel wheels constantly snap off studs and tear valve stems.

It might be because the load ratings have gone up so much. At one time, half ton meant just that. The truck could carry half a ton. Same with 3/4 and 1 ton. They could carry the load they were named for.

Hell, my 2011 was rated for 1250# from the factory and it think the 2019 is 1600#. 5 lugs isn’t cutting it anymore.

That would justify having 8 lugs on a 1500 Chevy but not having 6 lugs on a 2500 Chevy.

I saw like a 2018ish 2wd GM half ton/1500/whatever-you-want-to-call-it the other day and I was surprised they did the 5 lug thing that late.

My '85 had a optional "Camper Package" available with 1,755lb payload rolling on 5 lugs.

You got me. All we can do is guess what the reasons are.

The lugs on the GM models and the new Ranger are still 1/2” or the metric equivalent so they didn’t thin them out. Who knows...
