what other transmisions will work

what other transmisions will work for a 97 ford ranger. i was told that only another transmision from a 97 ford ranger would work because of the computer. Is this true if u have information on this please let me know

3.0L
2 wheel drive
automatic

anything from 95-97 from another 3.0 will work. anything from 98+ might work (not sure about computer changes/issues...but it will bolt up to your engine.)
