i’m going to remove the cylinder heads here soon to replace the lifters, what else should i replace while i’m in there? here’s what i already got in the shopping cart, pushrods, lifters, all gaskets that will be removed in the process and new head bolts. should i do rockers as well? along with valves and valve stems with seats? i believe the clearances are too large and there’s oil getting past the valve guides. the lifter/s has been collapsed for some time now so i’m assuming it’s f**ked up some other things in the process. just trying to figure out what i should get done “while i’m in there”. thanks for everything y’all have helped me with so far! can’t thank y’all enough

Cam, timing chain, lifters, pushrods, etc if you can swing it.

The free floating rockers are cool. I have a set, but still haven't run them.

YB block lifters fit 2.9/cologne iirc. I know the ones next to my block are from old Ford v8. Can't remember which ones. I think yb.

Factory cams were soft AF.

For some reason I am thinking it was FE lifters that fit (352, 360, 390) ??? My buddy just had his 4.0 gone through and I am pretty sure he used FE lifters in that and his engine guy said the 2.9 uses them too.

Ah, yeah, I think it is FE.

It's in the build thread somewhere. I think I put the part number I used.

I think

is the cam accessible with the heads off? or do i have to go deeper? and should i do the rocker arms. these are the last two things i’m debating whether i should replace or not

Stamina,

If you are replacing the heads:

1) get a reliable machinist to do a multi angle valve job. To accomplish this the valve guides and valves will be checked for tolerance.
2) since you are already replacing the lifters, the push rods and rockers are a cheap prudent move depending on their wear.
3) while the heads are off, definitely disassemble the rocker arm shafts. Clean them completely, then drill their oil passages +1 drill bit size, chamfer and deburr.

Timing cover and cam thrust plate. Not a huge deal on a 2.9.
when doing camshaft which i definitely am going to, should i do the bearings as well? i heard that they are one of the sole controllers of oil pressure and if they become worn they will decrease it.

Stamina,

I would not replace a stock camshaft without replacing the bearings.

I wholeheartedly RECOMMEND,

Oregon Cam Grinding (oregoncamshaft.com) of Vancouver Washington to do a "custom" regrind verses buying someone's Cracker-Jack box cam.

They offer the same profiles as the the big brands for half the the cost!!!

Replace with this.

Can you replace the cam on a 2.9 with the engine in the truck?

New bearing are a great idea, but when I replaced them during my 2.8 rebuild I used the access from the rear cam plug to remove/install them. I can’t imagine trying this outside of a rebuild.
