Why would we need two 4.0 forums? Doesn't make much sense to me

i can see where it'd be nice to have. it can get confusing trying to figure out if a topic is for ohv or sohc, but in reality you can only have so many forums and a seperate sohc one isnt really necessary

let me help, when you guys come on here and ask ?'s about 4.0's tell us if it is indeed a SOHC or a push rod engine(if you know the diff) because when u just give the year we have to sit here and think for a minute which 4.0 because they came in an exploder before they came in a ranger. so a lot of the time it is not clear because they are completely different! My $.02 it may not be a bad idea for a separate forum

I have (at present) a 3.0 Vulcan, but I totally agree with the original poster... are not the OHV and SOHC totally different engines?

Do they even use the same block?... certainly the "top end" issues are completely distinct.

PS: what YEAR was the "switch-over" from OHV to SOHC

I believe the block is the same, or at least extremely similar. The switch-over year for the Ranger was 2001. (2000= OHV, 2001= SOHC) The SOHC was first introduced in the Explorer as an OPTIONAL engine in 1997. Both the OHV and SOHC were available until 2001.
