Hi guys,

Just got an 86 ranger and I'm trying to figure out all the routing for the vacuum lines. I'm going off a combination of diagrams from the internet and a decal under my hood. I'm not sure what this thing is , I've looked up every part on these diagrams and haven't seen anything like this.

My best guess is a "vacuum tree" I think I've heard them called... I don't think that green one is supposed to loop... It looks like just a way to get more vacuum ports.

Thanks for the reply. I think you're correct a google search showed something similar. Would you happen to know what line the tree is coming off of? It comes a from around the other side of the valve cover, im wondering if I can get rid of it altogether

Yes that is a vacuum tree. It's for your emissions. The hoses in their current configuration are all wrong. Someone has tried to bypass the system. One vacuum line and the hoses to the other controls. As the engine heats up the sensor in the water jacket/cooling system opens the port allowing vacuum to operate things. You should consult the factory service manual. It will give you an overview of the system and show all the proper hose routing. Also check the hose ends as they harden and crack with age. Any cracked of loose connections will cause leaks and drive you nuts. Good luck.
