what is the best F-150 axle


i am not familiar with desert trucks in anyway shape or form. i am much more familiar with trail rigs and mud bog trucks.

No problem brother. Not many people on this site do understand what it takes to keep a desert truck alive.:icon_cheers: High speed in the ruff can eat a desert truck alive. Everything needs to be pretty much aftermarket and over built to survive the harsh conditions.

believe me i know all about eating parts alive. i have to clean mud and water out of my diffs and hubs every time i go out it seems. i also stand on the throttle bouncing off the rev limiter on a regular basis wheeling so i am well aware of the abuse and breakage of a trail truck just not a dessert one. i am sure sand gets into every fluid you have just like muddy water gets into mine. i can only imagine what sand can destroy.........

well I am gonna start off with 64" leafs in the rear and then when I can afford it I am going to link the rear.

May as well save up a little more money and link it from the start. The 64" kit is definitely one of the best long travel Ranger leaf spring kits out but if you save up a little more money you will be much happier with a linked truck. I have owned a 64" kit and have installed a ton of them and ill be honest the travel numbers are not what they claim and the bracket fitment is off by a lot. Basically when your done installing the brackets the original holes end up looking like a peanut accept for one hole per bracket haha! Other then that the travel numbers and performance is still better then the standard Deaver pack which only gets a true 14" of usable travel at best.
 
D44 is not a great idea which is why Ford droppped it way back then.

I had a Dana 44 rear in my '77 F100, 300-6 3 on the tree. There was a full-float D44 used in Chevy 3/4 tons in the 60s. Back when a 1/2-ton had a 5,000# GVWR and a 3/4-ton had a 6,000# GVWR is was enough.

is that what was in my 76 F100....... 302 and a C4?
 
and dont forget the semi float dana 60 5x5.5 that came in the f150 for a year or two...78-79

80&81 f100's came with a 5x4.5 9 inch....28 spline.small dinky guy.

I coulda sworn my 98 Expedition had the 9.25 (or.75) sterling rear end????

I know the 4.6L/4.2L trucks get the 8.8 still, and the 5.4L trucks get the bigger one (whichever it may be).

Plain jane 5.4 F-150's have a 9.75. Only the heavier trucks got the 10.25.

Dunno if the Expy's use the same 4.6 = 8.8 / 5.4 = 9.75 rule as the F-150's or not.
