I have an 85 Ranger 2.8 With a 5 Speed. I'm putting a 4 inch suspension lift and taking my 33's off my 99 Ranger. I'm not looking for gas mileage considering it's not my daily and if I do drive it I average 10 miles a day. It's gonna be my toy/weekend warrior. What ratio would be the best for trail riding and mudding? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Welcome to TRS

With a 2.8L & 33s, I'd definitely go with 4.88:1 gears.

a store. no stock vehicle came with 4.88 gears

No, they are different.

I probably should also mention 4.88s (or any aftermarket gears for that matter) are not available for the stock Dana28 axle that is factory under your '85, however you would want to swap this axle out regardless if you're putting on bigger tires as it is especially weak. The Dana35 and 8.8" from a later Ranger ('90-'97) are essentially bolt-in swaps, which 4.88:1 gears are available for.

I have a 99 ranger with the 8.8 i'm pretty sure. where would i get the front? from 90-97?

Sources for the D35:

Any '90-'97 Ranger having the 4.0L V6,
Any '91 or '92 Ranger, regardless of engine,
SOME (but not all) '93-'97 3.0L V6 trucks,
Any '91-'94 Explorer.

Shouldn't be hard to find one (ways to ID the axles are here).

Hope that helps
