What engine will work in 98

pats shouldn't be an issue, i didn't think they went back to 98, but i don't know, i've never owned a 90's vehicle of any type. the pats system, unless i'm mistaken, shouldn't make a difference, because you are replacing the motor, not the electronics in your truck... if it's the same motor going in as coming out, you're not planning on replacing electronics... are you?

Yeah, sounds like you cooked the engine.

Pretty much any OHV 4.0 will work for you if you swap over everything above the oil pan from your current engine.

Be careful if you try to swap a SOHC in, those had an extra bolt hole in the tranny bell to help spread the extra torque around. The bell bolts don't do much to take up torque, but if they put another hole in, you can bet there was a good reason.

The extra hole is just a relocated hole. The top right bell housing bolt lands right where the right timing chains is, so they redesigned the bell hosing with an extra hole about 1.5" up and out from the old hole. Newer trans had both holes and could be used on either the OHV and the SOHC. If you swap a SOHC and use an older trans, just dont use that bolt, it will be fine (7 out of 8 bolts). I've got 30k miles on my SOHC/4r55e combo without that bolt.

I have spent a lot of time in the tech forum, I think the best motor I found to put in is a 98 ohv from an explorer with 64k miles, was rearended. From what I read I will only have to deal with the PATS, but again I'm a newb, but still reading everything I can. All the wrecked one is parted out except for the motor and trans, so nothing else is available.

Any 95+ OHV will work. 94- blocks dont have the right mounting bosses for the newer motor mount brackets. Ford never stopped adding more holes to the side of these blocks.

98 was the first year for PATS in the Ex. It wont be a problem, like you said, just use the old computer and sensors on the newer motor.

Use the 98 OHV motor with your intake and electronics/EFI, and your set. No worries about the PATS from the donor :icon_thumby:

Update, finally got the heads off, I didn't work on it much because I had my kids for the weekend, but anyway. I hope to find out this week if I have to buy a motor or not. I'm kind of worried about getting it all back together:shok: Anybody close to South Mississippi who wants to work on a truck one afternoon..................

New update...........the heads are cracked, I found an 99 explorer 2wd that reverse went out on, body is kind of rough, has new 33's on back, but does have a 98 motor from a ranger, 4.0 ohv. I bought it for $450 and drove it home. I am thinking I can just unplug from the PCM on the firewall and just put the whole thing in, is this correct? Thanks for the help.

Yes, just make sure they haven't switched the fuel system out and it is the same as yours :icon_thumby:

Hmm, I think 97 was the first year for the SOHC 4.0, along with the 5-speed auto.

i would take the heads off the new truck and put them on yours... provided they aren't SOHC

I am using new motor, with the old motors wiring, I hit one snag, the cam position sensor on the old motor had three wires, the new one has two, does anyone know if I can just swap the electrical connection off of the old onto the new? Everything plugged in fine.

I believe the 3rd wire is a ground. But i would have to check the diagrams to be sure.

I took off the covers today to see if they are the same, I am hoping to put it back in today but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. The one with three wires has a halfmoon in it, where the two wire has more like a quarter or less. The new motor has the two wire connector, but I am using the 3 wire connector wiring. I just want to be sure before putting the motor back in.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the help getting the truck going, especially Ranger svt, but I finally got through with it yesterday, runs good, no real issues to speak of. TRS gave me all the information I needed.

your thanks will be shown, when you return the favor, by becoming a great member of this site, and help other people out with your knowledge

btw your welcome

As always, glad I could help. And like weezl said, return the favor to fellow TRS'ers :icon_thumby:
