What did YOU do today?

A day late here but I hiked about 4 miles yesterday and found a couple of mines that I have had on my bucket list. One did not disappoint, I struck out on the other two however as they ended up being on private land. Also found a really nice spot to pick up big slate rocks if I need some. Finished the day off with replacing a wheel bearing on my buddy's S10.

Usually I hope for the former, haven't found the latter and mostly run into this instead.

A deep pit of death unless you have ropes and skill to use them, of which I have neither.

The Forest Service is putting gates on the ones that are accessible on a horizontal level and some of the vertical shafts get a big piece of culvert shoved into them and backfilled, then a gate over the top. Pretty rare to find one that you can walk or crawl into that isn't gated off or collapsed.

The metal is painted. I'll probably reinstall it on the panel half late afternoon, early evening and hope it's cured enough to not peel all the paint out of the counter sunk holes. Most of the packing for Cass needs done Wednesday. So, the paint will have to finish curing while on the road.

So cool. We don't get that sort of stuff out this way.

About the private land deal.. does your state have any sort of implied access law? Maine does. Essentially.. unless a piece of property is clearly marked as being posted/private.. it's perfectly legal to be there unless/until the owner asks you to leave. Naturally there are some caveats to the law.. obviously you cant just dip into any random field and tear it all up doing donuts.. can't be harvesting trees.. cant build an ewok village or cobble together a doomsday bunker... but it allows you to get out there and explore nature in a grand way. Good law to have in a state thats a majority wilderness..

If it's not marked... it's pretty safe... but our population has exploded here and there are a LOT more people exploring than there used to be... and people vandalize shit. So there is a LOT more private land marked now and I am pretty careful about where I go poking around. We have a tin mine that closed in the 40's on our other property - I do not like people walking past my signs so I try to do the same for others... but if it's not marked... it's fair game in my mind.

This is one of my favorites, it's open and big enough you could drive an excavator into. They used to mine sand there. The walls are probably 16-20' tall.

This was a cool one we explored in AZ - screen grab from someone else's video, I was totally unprepared for this one and didn't take pics - but as far as I know it's way off limits now. Big steel door & cameras. There was absolutely nothing there when we went but that was years ago. Very cool mine though, had to walk across a false floor here that was a very long ways from the bottom and it went up past where I could see with my flashlight. We crawled into the bottom where that little square box thing is and it went way down past that.

This one was a good example of one that got abused... it was on private land but the owners let people hike in. I went up there about 10 years ago and it was really an amazing place but you can see the graffiti. The owners gated it off and started doing "tours" for a couple years and then the mill building burned down mysteriously in 2022. Now it's totally closed. Have to wonder if it was kids screwing around or if it was set intentionally to keep people from coming up there.

Not my pics:

Well, Paul’s Ranger has been relocated temporarily. Wednesday it should get a carport put over it. Tomorrow we move his Dodge PowerWagon to storage. F-150 been putting in some work.

Go through the wheel well on the passenger side next time. It makes a world of difference. ;)

The deck is back in the 2019.

And most of the gear has been put back in the truck. I'm working on finding a suitable container for the tent stuff since the one used in the trailer packing is too big for the available space.

Generally the law across the country is, if it doesn't have crops on it, it isn't fenced in, and it isn't posted with no trespassing signs, you can wander on there. However, the property owner has the right to tell you to leave. If you don't, you are legally trespassing at that point.

In some states, you don't even need a sign. Purple paint marks that meet certain criteria in size and spacing is enough to satisfy the no tresspassing laws. They do have to be on vertical objects, like trees, poles, and posts.

Been working on the tractor after work for a couple of hours each night. Found a couple of small things I want to replace that I hadn’t bought. My radius arms are bent bad, sign of a wore pivot pin/bushing up front. Bought a new pin & bushing some time ago. Cant find the bushing now. Going to have to figure out a way to straighten the radius arms. Found a set for $50 in northern ohio (milan) but he wont ship & Im not driving that far- unless I cant fix these bent beams.

Prepping my '94 for Raptor Liner... lots of scuffing. I found a nylon bristle brush at Walmart that says it's specifically for bedliner prep and it works really good but on a drill! It says you can use it on an angle grinder at 6500 RPM but my 6500 RPM angle grinder just takes the paint right off with very little effort... not good!

I'm about ready to wash it with soap & water, then I'll do a wax & grease remover wipe down and hopefully shoot it Friday night.

I would be tempted to put them back on the axle one at a time and drive up the arm in a gravel or dirt driveway with a car of some sort to start... That's crazy, the bushing on my 2000 is bad but the radius arms are straight, looks like a slightly different design... Changing that bushing is a job for after I get the dumb thing running...

Im thinking of putting the ball end into my receiver hitch & using a floor jack on the other end. I have a hyd press but id need stacks of blocks on either side. Dont really want to go after block right now.
