What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

These little Rangers really are bullet proof. Before I start mods on my 97 4.0 2WD, I’m just checking everything and making sure it runs right. I changed the oil, and the engine clatter, which wasn’t bad, almost disappeared. I was going to top off the trans, but I decided to just drain it and replace the fluid. Only about a pint came out. Ditto, all the noise went away. And then I put a quart of the 80W90 heavy weight oil in the rear end, just topping it off, and it still wasn’t full, I have to buy some more. It’s got 312,000 miles on it, and it’s not even close to giving up the ghost, all original one owner. Best ranger I got besides the free one....

What other large object would you fill with fuel?

Both were busy this weekend. The 2011 picked up replacement wood for the car port, the brakes on the 2019 got inspected and lubed and the winter tires were installed, and the 2019 took a trip to Youngstown to pick up my girlfriend's daughter and so we could eat dinner with her parents.

On ericbphoto’s rocket, I like the guy who looks like he’s 30ft away. No more pesky eyebrows!

Took the extra escape rims I bought a year ago in to town and bought new snow tires “arctic claw” $85/tire, would of liked bridgestones but they are 150/tire. Look good, way better then the generic westlake touring tires I swapped them out for. Nice to have it out again, and looks like it will be for a little bit. thermostat on the hhr isnt fully closing, barely gets above 175 now. I ordered one last week and still waiting on it, sunday I thought about getting one locally but they are $30 , what I have coming was 18 and already paid for. I’ll just drive the truck & wait for a good sunny day to get the work car back on the road. With the snow we got Id rather have the truck anyways, last winter proved the hhr isnt bad-weather freindly.

I run Artic Claw TXI's (225/70/15) on the rear of the ranger and I also ran Artic Claws (185/?/13's) on the Honda before that and I swear by them since both places I have lived that I have used them I needed to climb hills with very little speed and have had little issue with them. If I'm not mistaken the Artic claws are a Cooper subdivision tire.

Got the rearend back from my buddy Jeff today all cleaned and painted and the new 4.88 gears installed. I gave him the old 4.30s for the job so anytime no money changes hands and both sides are happy it's a win/win every time..........

You're putting a 28 spline 8.8 up to that abuse? Interesting, must not be a huge shock load or monstrous torque. I guess most of the failures are on big tires with lots of gear reduction (2.5:1 on top of low gears is a lot...)

Drove to the gas station to fill the 5 gallon can with non-ethanol gas. Use it in all the small engines I have. They seem to start easier after they have been sitting for awhile. Have been running Floyd on non-ethanol as he does sit quite a bit.

We're not looking to rotate the earth LOL. We're only making 425 HP at the most so it shouldn't be a parts breaker. If it fails there's a narrowed GM 12 bolt under the bench with 33 spline Strange spool and axles. Only problem is then it would need bigger wheel tubs, ladder bars/coilovers and new rims/slicks.

You can pay for that out of your race winnings. Ha-ha!

The race winnings often just help pay for the fees and fuel for the race you just ran. Maybe. Like most sports, unless you have big sponsorship money, you’re paying to play more than you are winning in prizes.

I just got back from taking the 2011 on a hunting trip. Sadly, all I did was take the rifle for a walk in the woods.

Took the drums off to try and evaluate how much damage my son did when he drove it with the parking brake on (at least he told me). Can definitely smell it, and some of the shiny new parts I put in a few months ago are a light brown (straw) color.... figure 450F - 500F. I don't think it did the shoes much good, either.

Kids..... grrrrrr...... did I mention that I hate working on drum brakes?!?!?!?!?

Cleaned chowdah out of it...

Ordered another 2 snow tires for the truck so it will have sticky snow shoes all around. It has an appointment to get them installed tomorrow afternoon. Now comes the hunt for two more center caps for the winter rims.
