what did i do wrong?

i did a clutch set in my truck (2.9, fm145) including both bearings but did not do a slave, didnt even open the lines. my clutch pedal has to be almost all the way up now for the clutch to engage, and it will sometimes slip, in gear with my foot off the clutch. does anybody know of any known issues with this trans/clutch that would make symptoms such as these?

Sounds like there is air in your lines. Does pumping the pedal make any difference?

The quick disconnect is supposed to hold the fluid, but they have been known not to work.

You put the clutch disk in facing the correct direction, right?

i thought it may be air in the lines but i never took any of the lines apart, i took the master off the firewall and dropped it with the trans to avoid the problem. i thought air would make the clutch not disengage properly though? i put the clutch disk in the right way, it was marked something like 'this side toward flywheel' so im sure that was right. im in the process of taking things apart, the extra hour tomorrow just may help me get it done before work monday...

is there any chance i didnt get the throw-out bearing back in right, making the whole thing longer than it should be? it seems like thats the problem...

Slow to apply and slips: either wrong clutch, loose bolts, or the friction material got oily. Since you dropped the clutch master with the tranny, see if you somehow got it mounted crooked and its not getting full stroke. might have also gotten something trapped behind the throwout so it can't come all the way back. Did you have the flywheel turned? Normally turning it too far will make it not want to release, but if cut crooked it will do what you describe.

Did the clutch come with instructions? Some clutches need to be seated when installed.

i torqued the bolts to spec, i thought about an oil leak but theres no drips under the truck, the clutch 'looked' right but i didnt compare exactly side by side. ive checked the master cylinder and it looks normal. i just did some running to get parts, will continue working as soon as im done here. im gonna pull everything apart and see what i see.

I've had the master cylinder do that to me. Try releasing the bleeder. It should solve your problem at least temporarily. If the problem persists you'll need to change the Master.
When a Rangers clutch system is set up properly, the pedal is high. A new clutch may slip a little as it gets broke in. It shouldn't though.

A long shot would be that you were sold the wrong throwout bearing; too long , or that the slave assembly is bolted on a little crooked.

well i started comparing parts side by side and didnt notice any differences, i started playing with the master/slave and think i got myself in over my head, doing things without thinking. so now i need to know, did i hurt anything by moving the master with stuff apart like this? can you bleed the line with the trans out of the truck? i started playing with the master, then i opened the reservoir cap and it sucked in a bunch of air. so i held the reservoir upright and filled it, opened the bleeder, cycled the master a bunch, got a lot of air out of it, the fluid comes out clean now. i held the master at a couple different angles trying to push out as much air as i can. am i fawked now or can i still save it?

i put it all back together, it hasn't slipped at all in the few miles i've put it on it. i will be driving it 60 miles tomorrow to work and back, we will see how it does. surprisingly enough, they hydraulics seem fine, no gear clash or anything similar. i do think that part of my problem may be the slave cylinder not retracting though.
