i have a 1990 ranger with a 2.3 in it and the motors been apart for almost a year, and my dad left the head outside :damnit1:, so its rusted idk how bad (i havent seen it yet) but what could i do for it :icon_confused:

Depending on what shape its in, you may be able to wipe it down with wd 40 and call it good or it may need to take a trip to an engine machine shop to have it torn down for a valve job and cleaned and reasembled. something like this usually runs around $90-100 plus parts (usually just valve stem seals, but you may be farther ahead to purchase a head set so youll have all the gaskets to put it back together.

Yeah, surface rust isn't usually a problem on the outside, but if the valves get rusty they may not seal properly...and the valve seats can prove to be unsuitable for proper closing...but only a year outside might not do anything serious...best to have it checked though...unless you can't afford the rebuild cost at the moment...worst that could happen is you have to remove it and have it rebuilt later...

You can, if you're careful, lightly smooth the edges of the valves and seats from inside...just crank the cam and do them one at a time...don't use anything too abraisive...and make sure you clean out the crap before actually installing the head...

i found it yesterday and carried it into my house (its heavy), luckily my dad put it in an old refrigerater so its in butter shape than i expected i havent took it apart yet but from what i can tell its ok just some surface rust, but in finding the head i found my radiator to and its done for (dad took it apart for alluminum) i swear if the truck wasent in his name i would sue him for stripping it, he also sold my american racing wheels off of it (the third set of MY alluminum rims hes sold/traded/gave away in a year + the set of steel rims he destroyed in a car wreck) so i need rims/tires i only have 1 factory alluminum wheel off a 96 with a worn out tire. i also remembered the motor is out of the 96 freshly rebuilt but it still has less power then the original motor off the 90, also needs a trany. sorry for the long post just have nothing better to do.

just take some 000 steel wool and go over the head with that, its very fine and should'nt hurt anything
