What caliber handgun should I get?

Kid shooting one. They have to be heavy for that big load.

Sad thing is, you can hand load 45LC's to do nearly the same thing but you can't really buy 45LC rounds to do the same thing. There are too many old 45's out there that would not stand the pressure of a high performance 45, so they keep the pressure low and sacrafice performance in an otherwise adequate cartridge.

Not so much that, but it was originally designed as a blackpowder round. The casing had to be as long as it is for the powder charge they needed... it had to be full or it could blow up the gun (loading a blackpowder firearm with an airgap is BAD) As smokeless came onto the scene they tweaked the existing designs of guns to handle the higher pressures of smokeless, and the shells didn't need to be full of powder anymore to be close performancewise with the BP .45, or to prevent the chance of blowing up the gun.

Now, modern guns are made stronger so people can stuff more powder in them.

That thing is a monster! Competing with the Magnum Research BFR? If so, still have aways to go. The BFR is a 45-70!!! I have a Marlin Guide gun in 45-70 and I can honestly say I can not imagine firing one downrange from a pistol.
